Optimus Archive

A chronological archive of Tesla Optimus milestones, from the initial concept reveal at AI Day 2021 to the latest demonstrations. Track the evolution of Tesla's humanoid robot as it progresses from a dancing human in a suit to a sophisticated robot capable of walking, running, doing chores, and learning from human demonstrations.

January 16, 2026 - Optimus arm over Elon

  • Black tights + AI video

November 7, 2025 - Elon and Optimus dances after getting the approval in the shareholder vote @ 2025 Annual Shareholder Meeting

  • Dancing got a lot smoother

December 3, 2025 - Optimus runs

  • Looking pretty smooth. Waist movement seems much more natural than the Octover 19, 2024 factory walking video

October 7, 2025 - Optimus x Jared Leto Kung Fu

  • Performs a kick. Got a black and red aesthetic, performance is same as Oct 4 footage.

October 4, 2025 - Optimus learns Kung Fu

  • Withstands gentle push. Joints sound clunky and plastic like.

September 7, 2025 - Poptimus @ Tesla Diner

May 21, 2025 - Optimus does chores

  • Optimus performs task as instructed via natural language. "Put the trash in the bin." It performs many chores, all trained on a single neural net. The neural nets were trained by humans performing the same task.

May 14, 2025 - Optimus ballets and shuffles

  • It's actually pretty good, and dances like Elon Musk, might be better than him.

May 13, 2025 - Optimus can sorta jump while dancing

Octover 11, 2024 - Optimus makes appearance at Cybercab unveil

  • 20:00: Dozen Optimus bots walk out.
  • 23:45: Optimus dance in sync.
  • 30:00: Optimus hands out drinks (reportedly teleoperated)

Octover 19, 2024 - Optimus walks around the factory, autonomously

  • It makes sense of the surrounding. It can dock itself to a wireless charging station. It can pick up 11kg of payload and carry it around. It can walk up the stairs. It can hand out items that the human points at.

December 14, 2023 - Optimus Gen2 unveil

  • Bumblebee: released September 2022
  • Optimus Gen1: released March 2023
  • Tesla designed actuator and sensor, 2-DoF actuated neck, 30% walk speed boost (still pretty slow), foot force and torque sensing, 10kg weight reduction, can do squats, 11-DoF hands, tactile sensing on all fingers, can pick up eggs

September 25, 2023 - Optimus locates its limbs using vision

  • It can sort different colored blocks
  • 1:10: Balance is pretty good.

May 17, 2023 - Optimus update

  • Optimus walks
  • Optimus perceives its surroundings and can memorize
  • Optimus trains using human demonstration videos

March 2, 2023 - Optimus picks up another arm @ 2023 Investor Day

  • Operates electric screwdriver
  • "Real-world AI"
  • "The actuators in Optimus are all custom design Tesla actuators. So we designed the electric motor, the gearbox, the power, electronics, obviously the battery pack and everything else that goes into Optimus. We're actually quite surprised to find how little was available off the shelf because there's a lot of vast number of electric motors, gear boxes and whatnot that are available in the world and we found none of them were useful in a humanoid robot. Literally none. So you have to custom design the actuators for a humanoid robo. And so the same team that designed the groundbreaking electric motors that are in the say the Model S Plaid designed the actuators in the robot"

October 1, 2022 - Bumble C showing @ AI Day 2022

  • 21:47: Optimus appears (doesn't walk yet)
  • "So, this is essentially the same self-driving computer that runs in your Tesla cars by the way."
  • Identifies objects, waters plant, picks up machinery components
  • "What you saw was what we call Bumble C. That's our sort of rough development robot using semi offthe-shelf actuators. But we actually have gone a step further than that. We actually have an Optimus bot with fully Tesla designed and built actuators, battery pack, control system, everything. It wasn't quite ready to walk but I think it will walk in a few weeks."
  • "So last year we unveiled the Tesla bot concept, but a concept doesn't get us very far. We knew we needed a real development and integration platform to get real life learnings as quickly as possible. So that robot that came out and did the little routine for you guys, we had that within six months. built working on software integration, hardware upgrades over the months since then. But in parallel, we've also been designing the next generation, this one over here. So, this guy is rooted in the the foundation of sort of the vehicle design process. You know, we're leveraging all of those learnings that we already have."
  • Optimus Gen1: Full body DoF 200+, hand DoF 27.

August 20, 2021 - Human dancing in robot-looking bodysuit @ AI Day 2021

  • "Tesla is a robotics company. Cars are robots on wheels. It makes sense to make it into a humanoid form."
  • No robot yet. Named "Tesla Bot"
